Michelin 3-Star Korean Fine Dining: A Luxurious Culinary Journey at La Yeon, Shilla Hotel Seoul
Nestled within the prestigious Shilla Hotel in Seoul, La Yeon stands as a beacon of refined Korean gastronomy. Awarded the coveted Michelin 3-star rating, La Yeon offers an unparalleled dining experience that seamlessly blends traditional Korean flavors with modern culinary techniques. My recent visit to this esteemed restaurant was nothing short of a culinary journey, and I’m excited to share my experience.
Location and Accessibility
La Yeon is conveniently located in Jung-gu, Seoul, within the Shilla Hotel. It boasts excellent accessibility, with Dongguk University Station nearby and shuttle services available. Being situated inside the Shilla Hotel, the ambiance is inherently upscale and sophisticated, setting the stage for a special dining occasion.
Ambiance and Service
The interior of La Yeon is personally one of my favorite among domestic restaurants. While not adhering to trendy décor, it excels in creating a comfortable and luxurious environment. The spacious table arrangement ensures privacy and a relaxed dining atmosphere, a feature often reflected in the price point. Carpeted floors minimize noise, contributing to a serene and intimate setting. The evening view is also spectacular, especially as the sun sets, offering a glimpse of Namsan Tower and the beautifully illuminated Shilla Hotel swimming pool.
A Taste of the Exquisite La Yeon Course
The course menu at La Yeon is a curated selection of Korean delicacies. Starting with “Jujeonburi”, we were treated to Maesaengi seaweed crisps and dried jujubes. The jujubes were particularly noteworthy for their perfectly chewy texture and natural sweetness. The “Welcome Dish” featured baby octopus, tenderly poached and served chilled with seasonal dureup shoots and a refreshing plum soy sauce – a delightful start to awaken the palate.
The “Gujeolpan”, a classic Korean dish, was presented beautifully. This platter of nine delicacies, including an array of vegetables and meats, is designed to be wrapped in thin crepes. While the individual flavors might subtly blend, the overall experience is a harmonious mix of textures and tastes, enhanced by a mustard dipping sauce. It’s a dish that speaks to Korean culinary heritage and visual artistry.
Next, the “Spicy Sea Squirt Bibimbap” showcased fresh sea squirt with seasonal vegetables. Followed by “Grilled Tilefish”, which was presented with pohangcho spinach and a savory pine nut sauce. The tilefish was cooked to a perfect crisp on the outside, maintaining a moist interior, although slightly less succulent than hoped for.
The “Grilled Golden Tilefish” was a highlight. Prepared in a more roasted style than before, it was accompanied by vegetables and a unique spicy fish stew-like sauce, offering a delightful balance to the richness of the fish. However, as the sauce cooled down quickly, a warmer or a small burner would have enhanced this course further.
For the main course, the “Braised Short Ribs (Galbijjim)” was an absolute standout. It’s arguably the best galbijjim I’ve ever tasted. The ribs were incredibly tender and flavorful, with the perfect balance of fat and lean meat, infused with a savory-sweet sauce. It’s a dish I wholeheartedly recommend, even with the additional surcharge.
The meal concluded with a choice of “Sotbap” (pot rice). I opted for the sea bream pot rice, a comforting and flavorful dish accompanied by traditional Korean side dishes and soup. For dessert, unique flavors continued with burdock root ice cream and pine nut cookies, followed by sweet rice cake with red bean paste and citrus preserves, and omija tea. While the dessert selection felt slightly limited in variety, the unique flavors were memorable.
Michelin Star and Value Consideration
La Yeon’s Michelin 3-star status is well-deserved, reflecting its commitment to culinary excellence, impeccable service, and luxurious ambiance. While the price point is considerable (260,000 KRW per person for the course), the experience justifies the cost for a special occasion or for those seeking the pinnacle of Korean fine dining. However, given the strong emphasis on traditional Korean flavors and the accessibility of Korean cuisine in general, one might consider if this level of formality and price is aligned with personal preferences.
Final Verdict
La Yeon at Shilla Hotel offers an exceptional Korean fine dining experience. From the refined atmosphere and attentive service to the meticulously crafted dishes, every aspect is designed to impress. While the traditional Korean flavor profile might be a point of consideration for some, the quality of ingredients, culinary execution, and overall experience are undeniably top-tier. If you’re looking to indulge in a truly special and authentic Korean culinary journey in Seoul, La Yeon is a highly recommended destination.
