Fresh Seafood Feast in Gangnam: A Review of Misikga’s House in Won-dong Food Alley

Hello, seafood lovers! Seoul Zindong here. Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a fantastic 횟집 (Hoe-jip, Korean raw fish restaurant) located in the bustling Won-dong Food Alley in Gangnam. I’ve passed by this place countless times and always meant to visit, and after finally dining there, I only regret not going sooner! Misikga’s House (미식가의 집) offers an incredible course meal for just ₩25,000 per person. Let’s dive into this gourmet experience!

Location and Ambiance

Misikga’s House is conveniently situated in the Won-dong Food Alley, nestled between Daecheong Station and Samsung Seoul Hospital. It’s also right next to another restaurant I’ve previously reviewed, University Village Pig’s Feet Onki Jokbal. The location is easily accessible and perfect for a delightful seafood dinner after work or exploring Gangnam.

The Generous Course Meal

The menu at Misikga’s House includes various courses and a la carte options, including grilled dishes. We opted for the “Modeum Course” (모듬 코스), and it was truly impressive. The course composition is detailed on the menu, and I’ll walk you through each dish as it was served.

숙성 Hoe ( 숙성 Sashimi – Aged Sashimi)

Misikga’s House specializes in 숙성 Hoe, which is aged or 숙성 sashimi. They display the aging time, though it’s generally less than a day, leaning more towards “freshly prepared” than heavily aged. Interestingly, all their Do-mi (Sea Bream) is domestically sourced, not Japanese, which was a pleasant surprise.

Course Highlights

  • 간장새우 (Ganjang Saewoo – Soy Sauce Marinated Shrimp): The course began with soy sauce marinated shrimp, one per person, generously sized and very flavorful.
  • 죽 (Jook – Porridge): Next up was a comforting bowl of porridge, perfect for warming up the stomach and preparing for the seafood feast. My companion, who tasted just the porridge, immediately declared it a 맛집 (Mat-jip – 맛집 – 맛집 – Restaurant).
  • 문어숙회 (Mun-eo Sukhoe – Boiled Octopus): We then enjoyed boiled octopus. Coming from the East Sea, known for its octopus, I can attest to its quality. It was perfectly cooked and tender, an excellent pairing with Soju (Korean distilled spirit).
  • 모듬회 (Modeum Hoe – Assorted Sashimi): The main event! The assorted sashimi platter included 광어 (Gwang-eo – Flatfish), 도미 (Do-mi – Sea Bream), 연어 (Yeon-eo – Salmon), and even Banga-eo (Yellowtail). They mentioned that the seasonal fish changes, and in winter, they serve 방어 (Banga-eo – Yellowtail). The quality of the Yellowtail belly and back cuts was top-notch, and the portions were substantial. The sashimi had a pleasant savory flavor thanks to the 숙성 process, and the fish itself tasted rich and fresh.
  • 새송이구이 (Saesongi Gu-i – Grilled King Oyster Mushroom): A delightful surprise was the grilled king oyster mushroom. Its texture was almost meat-like!
  • 콘치즈 (Corn Cheese): A classic 횟집 side dish, corn cheese. Since many people skip it, I usually get to enjoy most of it myself, and this time was no different!
  • 초밥 (Chobap – Sushi): Two pieces of sushi per person arrived next, a welcome addition to the course.
  • 가자미조림 (Gajami Jorim – Braised Flatfish): Instead of grilled fish, we were served braised flatfish due to availability. Surprisingly, it was a whole fish, not just pieces! The braising was subtly sweet, allowing the natural flavor of the fish to shine.
  • 튀김 (Twigim – Fried Food): The final dish of the course was assorted tempura – shrimp, perilla leaf, and sweet potato. The batter was wonderfully crispy and delicious.

Bonus and Final Touches

I spotted Gono-wada (고노와다 – Sea Cucumber Guts) on the menu and had to order it. Gono-wada can be slightly pungent and is best enjoyed with sashimi. Since I had almost finished my sashimi, I hesitated, but the owner kindly offered to add some extra sashimi as a service! This thoughtful gesture was truly appreciated. Gono-wada paired with sashimi is a fantastic combination, creating a savory, slightly briny, and umami-rich flavor – a perfect Soju companion. It’s almost like a seafood noodle soup you can just slurp down!

To finish, I was craving something soupy and considered the 활우럭탕 (Hwal-Ureok Tang – Live Rockfish Soup), but it seemed too large. So, I opted for 알탕 (Al-Tang – Roe Soup). It was packed with roe – incredibly generous and satisfying.

Overall Impression

Overall, dining at Misikga’s House was an exceptional experience. The quality and quantity of food for ₩25,000 in Gangnam is truly outstanding value. I even mistakenly assumed the friendly male and female owners were a couple but learned they are siblings! Don’t make the same assumption! For ₩25,000 per person, this meal was a steal. I highly recommend Misikga’s House for anyone looking for a delicious and affordable seafood feast in Gangnam. I’ll definitely be back for more!
