Discover Rare Seafood Delights: Sea Squirt Sashimi & Goose Barnacles in Seoul

Have you ever tried sea squirt sashimi or goose barnacles? If you’re in Seoul and looking for a unique culinary adventure, you’re in for a treat! Today, we’re diving into 날로 먹는 집 (Nallo Meokneun Jip), a hidden gem located near Achasan Station that specializes in serving incredibly fresh and rare seafood delicacies. Prepare to expand your palate with flavors you likely haven’t experienced before in the heart of Seoul.

A Hidden Seafood Haven Near Achasan Station

Nallo Meokneun Jip, which translates to “Eating Raw Place,” is conveniently situated right in front of Achasan Station Exit 2. Its proximity to Jayang and Gunja areas makes it an ideal spot for either starting your evening or enjoying a second round of drinks and delicious food. We decided to make it our first stop for the night, eager to explore their unique menu.

Diverse Menu with Unique Specialties

This restaurant offers a wide array of options, from classic sashimi and seafood dishes to hearty soups and stews, and even Korean beef tartare (Yukhoe). They also feature set menus for those who want a curated experience. Beyond the usual soju and beer, Nallo Meokneun Jip boasts a selection of traditional Korean liquors, perfect for pairing with their seafood. What truly caught our attention were the seasonal specials listed on the wall, including sea squirt sashimi (미더덕회), horned sea squirt, and stone sea squirt. Our primary mission for the evening was to try the highly acclaimed sea squirt sashimi.

Sea Squirt Sashimi (미더덕회): An Aromatic Delight

Before our main dish arrived, we were served complimentary side dishes: a rich and flavorful seaweed soup, boiled peas, and freshwater snails. Soon after, the star of the show, the sea squirt sashimi, graced our table. For those who typically avoid sea squirt in steamed dishes due to its unique texture and sometimes overpowering flavor, this sashimi is a revelation. As a sea squirt enthusiast myself, I can attest to the exceptional quality and taste of Nallo Meokneun Jip‘s rendition.

The sashimi is served with fresh water dropwort (minari) and chili peppers, allowing you to customize each bite to your preference. Importantly, the sea squirt is expertly prepared, eliminating the worry of hot water spurting out, which can be an issue with cooked sea squirt. The sashimi offers a pure, intense aroma without any off-putting saltiness. I even tried eating the skin, though for newcomers, just enjoying the tender meat inside is perfectly acceptable.

Goose Barnacles (거북손): An Exotic Culinary Adventure

Next up was the intriguing goose barnacles, known in Korean as “Geobukseon,” meaning “Turtle Ship,” due to their shell’s resemblance to a turtle’s hand. If you find sea squirt unique, goose barnacles take exotic seafood to another level. Thankfully, unlike sea squirt sashimi, goose barnacles are served boiled. Peeling back the shell reveals a meat similar in texture and taste to clams or ark shells. My curiosity about goose barnacles was piqued years ago when I saw them featured on a Korean variety show, and finally experiencing them was truly rewarding. Trying new and unique foods like this is what makes culinary exploration so exciting!

Yukhoe (육사시미): A Meat Lover’s Interlude

To balance our seafood feast, we also ordered Yukhoe, Korean beef tartare. The quality of the meat was evident in its vibrant color and freshness. Nallo Meokneun Jip is apparently also renowned for its Yukhoe and mackerel sashimi, further showcasing their commitment to fresh, raw dishes.

Value and Verdict

Priced at 29,000 won for approximately 40 pieces, the sea squirt sashimi is not only delicious but also remarkably affordable. Considering each piece is practically begging for a shot of soju, it’s a high-value dish for those who enjoy drinks with their seafood. If you’re seeking out-of-the-ordinary seafood experiences in Seoul, Nallo Meokneun Jip is a must-visit. It’s a place where you can discover rare and fresh flavors that are hard to find elsewhere in the city.
