Situated between a real estate office and a hearing aid store, Gobau has been steadfastly grilling meats for decades, earning its reputation as a legendary establishment in the Dongmyo area.
Unbelievable Value and Quality
Prepare to be amazed by the incredible value for money at Gobau, often referred to as “갓성비 (God-tier value).” The menu boasts not only reasonable prices but also generous portions, ensuring a satisfying and affordable meal. Even the side dishes are plentiful and diverse, a testament to their commitment to providing a complete and fulfilling dining experience.
The restaurant uses 무쇠판 (Museo Pan), a traditional cast iron grill, which is a mark of quality often seen in high-end Hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurants. This traditional grilling method enhances the flavor of the meat and adds to the overall authentic atmosphere.
Savor Premium Beef and Pork
Let’s talk about the star of the show: the meat! We started with the Deungsim (등심 – Sirloin), and were pleasantly surprised to find an abundance of Salchisal (살치살 – Chuck Flap Tail) mixed in, even though Salchisal wasn’t explicitly on the menu. Apparently, the owner generously includes the attached Salchisal with the Deungsim order, a delightful bonus of premium Two-grade Hanwoo Salchisal. The marbling and quality were simply outstanding – a true hidden gem in Dongmyo!
To complement the exquisite beef, we indulged in Baekseju (백세주), a traditional Korean rice wine. Its smooth, slightly sweet, and nutty flavor profile pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats, especially rich beef. It’s a lighter alternative to soju, making it a sophisticated choice for your K-BBQ experience.
Don’t Miss the Pork Delights
Beyond beef, Gobau also excels in pork BBQ. We sampled both Samgyeopsal (삼겹살 – Pork Belly) and Gabrisal (가브리살 – Pork Jowl), ordering one portion each. The Samgyeopsal came with the skin on (Ogyeopsal – 오겹살, Five-layered Pork Belly), an unexpected upgrade that showcased the owner’s generosity. The pork quality was equally impressive, juicy and flavorful.
The Gabrisal was a revelation. When prepared right, Gabrisal, in our opinion, surpasses even Hangjeongsal (항정살 – Pork Cheek) in taste. Its crispy texture, chewy tenderness, rich flavor, and bursting juices made it an unforgettable highlight of the meal.
Pro-Tip: Hanwoo Sushi & Must-Try Sides
For a palate cleanser, try making your own Hanwoo sushi with rice and a slice of grilled beef. Even better, try it with their Gochu Jangajji (고추 장아찌 – Korean Chili Pepper Pickle). The spicy and tangy pickle cuts through the richness of the meat perfectly, revitalizing your taste buds for more BBQ indulgence.
