Bongpiyang Restaurant Review: Must-Try Marinated Pork Ribs and Pyeongyang Cold Noodles in Seoul
Recently, I visited Bongpiyang (봉피양) to enjoy their famous marinated pork ribs (Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi). Bongpiyang is a well-known restaurant chain with multiple locations throughout Seoul and surrounding areas, making it quite accessible for anyone craving authentic Korean cuisine. While experiences might slightly vary branch to branch, my visit was focused on indulging in their signature dishes.
Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi: Sweet and Savory Perfection
Bongpiyang is particularly renowned for its Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi, or marinated pork ribs. Interestingly, some Bongpiyang locations offer pre-grilled ribs, while others allow you to grill them yourself at your table over charcoal. My visit was to a location where the ribs are grilled in the kitchen and served ready to eat, which is perfect for a convenient and quick meal.
The marinade on the pork ribs is a highlight – not overly strong or overpowering, allowing the natural flavor of the pork to shine through. The meat itself was wonderfully tender and juicy, just as expected. It’s the kind of dish that pairs perfectly with a bowl of steaming white rice. The combination of sweet and savory marinated pork and fluffy rice is a classic Korean comfort food for a reason! Ideally, the ribs should be slightly caramelized on the outside while remaining moist and tender on the inside. On this particular visit, a few pieces were a touch more cooked than my preference, but overall, the quality was excellent.
Pyeongyang Naengmyeon: A Refreshing Complement
Beyond the marinated pork, Bongpiyang is also highly praised for its Pyeongyang Naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). If you’re a fan of Pyeongyang-style cold noodles, Bongpiyang’s version is definitely worth trying. In fact, I make it a point to order a bowl of their Naengmyeon every time I visit. It’s a refreshing and light dish, especially after indulging in the rich flavors of the pork ribs. The subtle and savory broth of Pyeongyang Naengmyeon offers a perfect counterpoint to the sweetness of the Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi.
A Go-To for Marinated Pork Ribs (Despite the Price)
While Bongpiyang might be on the pricier side compared to some other Korean BBQ restaurants, it undeniably comes to mind first when I crave marinated pork ribs. The quality of the meat and the delicious marinade justify the slightly higher cost for a special meal or when you want a guaranteed satisfying experience.
If you are in Seoul and looking for a restaurant specializing in delicious Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi and excellent Pyeongyang Naengmyeon, Bongpiyang is a fantastic choice. With multiple locations, you can easily find a branch near you to experience these Korean culinary delights.
