This hidden gem, located in Naun-dong, offers an unbelievably satisfying dining experience with a staggering 15 side dishes (banchan) for the incredibly affordable price of just ₩8,000 (approximately $6 USD)!
This restaurant was a lucky find for me. I stumbled upon it while working in Gunsan before I started my YouTube channel. I was simply looking for a place to eat after work and walked into Seowoo Restaurant without any prior research. To my surprise, the meal was absolutely amazing, exceeding all expectations for such a casual spot. Later, I discovered that Seowoo Restaurant is actually a well-known local favorite, with people even traveling from neighboring areas to dine here. After several visits, I knew I had to share this incredible place with you all!
Location: Gunsan’s Best Kept Secret
Seowoo Restaurant is nestled in Naun-dong, Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, South Korea. While it might not be in the most touristy area, it’s definitely worth seeking out for an authentic and budget-friendly Korean dining experience.
Feast Like a King (or Queen) for ₩8,000
Seowoo Restaurant is famous for its incredible value. For just ₩8,000 for Agwi-tang (monkfish stew) or ₩9,000 for Dongtae-tang (pollack stew), you get the same amazing array of 15 side dishes. I opted for the Dongtae Daejang-tang (pollack intestine stew), which is my personal favorite.
The side dishes are truly the stars of the show! Prepare to be amazed by a spread that includes:
- Ganjang Gejang (간장게장): Soy sauce marinated crab. While the reviewer modestly rates it as “just okay,” it’s still a highly sought-after dish and they offer unlimited refills!
- Jeyuk Bokkeum (제육볶음): Spicy stir-fried pork. A classic Korean favorite.
- Grilled Mackerel (고등어): Perfectly grilled and flavorful.
- Japchae (잡채): Glass noodles with vegetables and meat.
- Kimchi Jjigae (김치 지짐이): Kimchi stew.
- Urook Muchim (우럭 무침): Spicy braised white radish with rockfish.
- …and many more! (A total of 15 delightful banchan!)
This isn’t just a few token side dishes – it’s a full-blown banchan extravaganza that rivals even upscale Korean set menu restaurants. The sheer variety and quantity are astounding, especially considering the price.
Dongtae Daejang-tang: A Must-Try
While the side dishes are phenomenal, the main dishes are not to be overlooked. The Dongtae Daejang-tang is particularly noteworthy. It’s packed with pollack intestines, roe, and generous portions of pollack meat. Unlike some places that skimp on the good stuff, Seowoo Restaurant is incredibly generous with their ingredients, making it a truly satisfying and flavorful stew.
Is It Too Good to Be True?
Every time I visit Seowoo Restaurant, I’m left wondering how they can offer such a lavish meal at such a low price. It truly feels like they’re giving away food! If you’re in Gunsan or nearby, you absolutely must experience the incredible value and deliciousness of Seowoo Restaurant. It’s a culinary gem that deserves to be discovered.
