Experience Tongyeong’s Dajji: A Culinary Journey into Korea’s Unique Seafood Feast

As the cool breeze swept through Tongyeong, especially on a beautiful summer night, it was clear we were in for a special treat. Known for its stunning coastal views and unique maritime charm, Tongyeong offers more than just scenic beauty; it boasts a distinctive culinary culture that’s an absolute must-experience for any foodie or traveler. Our destination for the evening? The legendary Dajji (다찌) alley.

What is Tongyeong Dajji?

Dajji is not just a restaurant; it’s an immersive dining tradition unique to Tongyeong, South Korea. Imagine an omakase-style experience where the chef surprises you with an endless array of fresh, seasonal seafood and local delicacies, all served directly to your table, often accompanied by local spirits. The concept is simple: you pay a set price per person, and the food just keeps coming – whatever is freshest and best that day. It’s a spontaneous and abundant feast, embodying the generous spirit of Tongyeong’s coastal culture.

The origin of the name “Dajji” has a couple of fascinating theories. One suggests it comes from the Korean phrase “다 있지” (da itji), meaning “it’s all here” – implying that everything you need, from drinks to an endless spread of appetizers, is provided. Another popular theory traces it back to the Japanese colonial period, deriving from “tachi-nomi” (立ち飲み), meaning “standing drink” – referring to the early days when people would stand to quickly enjoy their food and drinks before heading back to work. While the “standing” aspect might have faded, the essence of abundant, fresh offerings remains.

This “all-inclusive” dining culture isn’t exclusive to Tongyeong. Similar concepts exist elsewhere in Korea, such as “Silbi” in Jinju or “Gamaekjip” (convenience store with beer) in Jeonju, each with its local twist. However, Tongyeong’s Dajji truly shines with its focus on unparalleled fresh seafood, thanks to its prime coastal location.

Our Dajji Adventure in Tongyeong

Navigating the vibrant Dajji alley, with its various establishments ranging from traditional raw fish restaurants to cozy street food tents and even live music cafes, was an experience in itself. We decided to seek out a hidden gem, opting to explore a place less frequented by famous figures, in true “discovery” spirit. We found ourselves at a promising Dajji house, likely “Yeobara Euna” (여봐라 은하), known for its exceptional freshness.

Yeobara Euna: A Hidden Gem of Freshness

Upon entering this highly recommended establishment in Tongyeong, we were warmly greeted by the staff. The ordering process was delightfully straightforward: we simply stated our party size (two people), and the culinary journey began. The chef explained that their menu changes daily, reflecting the freshest catches of the season. Their commitment to quality was evident; the chef’s brother personally visits the fish and shellfish auctions twice a day (at 4 AM and 4 PM) to secure the absolute freshest ingredients, ensuring every dish served is of the highest standard.

A Parade of Fresh Seafood Delights

The table was soon laden with an astonishing variety of dishes. Our feast included:

  • Abalone Concoction (Jeonbokju): A unique, slightly bitter yet deeply flavorful abalone essence, boasting a rich depth from its entrails.
  • Sea Squirt Fermented Paste with Egg (Meongge Jeotgal): An intriguing dish where the briny, savory fermented sea squirt paste was perfectly balanced by the mild creaminess of egg.
  • Raw Anchovy Sashimi (Saengmyeolchihoe): A truly remarkable dish that many consider the highlight. Unlike anything we’d tasted, the anchovies were incredibly fresh, melting in the mouth with a delicate texture, far surpassing anything found elsewhere. Its meticulous preparation, which involves washing impurities with rice water, truly makes it a unique delicacy.
  • Assorted Sashimi Platter: Featuring the day’s freshest catches – flounder (Gwang-eo), sea bream (Dom), and seabass (Nong-eo). Each slice was firm, chewy, and bursting with natural sweetness, testament to their recent capture.
  • Live Seafood Selection: A bucket filled with a captivating array of still-moving seafood, including live shrimp (a truly fresh experience as it was literally moving!), sea squirt, sea cucumber, and abalone. This demonstrated the unparalleled freshness of the ingredients.
  • Grilled Rockfish (Ureok-gui): A perfectly grilled, succulent rockfish, a comforting and flavorful counterpoint to the raw dishes.
  • Steamed Scallops (Bidangari-bi): Tender and sweet, showcasing the natural taste of the sea.
  • Spicy Clear Fish Stew (Japeo Jiri Maeuntang): This was the grand finale and, surprisingly, crowned as the “best of the day” by the chef. A robust, clear soup brimming with various fresh “잡어” (japeo – small, mixed fish) like flatfish, rockfish, and others, offering a profound depth of flavor with a pleasant spicy kick from the green onions. It was the perfect savory conclusion to our seafood extravaganza.

Unbeatable Value and Unforgettable Taste

The sheer quantity and quality of food were astounding, especially given the price. For two people, the entire Dajji experience at this establishment in Tongyeong cost an incredible 90,000 KRW (approximately $65-70 USD at current exchange rates). This is an unbelievable value for such fresh, diverse, and abundant seafood, making it a truly unbeatable deal. Every single dish, from the opening abalone essence to the closing stew, maintained an exceptional standard of freshness and flavor.
