Gimpo’s Hidden Culinary Gems: Must-Try Local Restaurants Beyond the Airport

When you think of Gimpo, South Korea, the first thing that often comes to mind is Gimpo International Airport. It’s a bustling hub of domestic and international travel, with planes frequently flying low overhead, evoking thoughts of journeys and departures. But is Gimpo just about the airport? Our recent exploration aimed to find out if this city holds hidden culinary treasures beyond the runways, proving that there’s more to Gimpo than meets the eye (or the flight path!).

The Quest for Gimpo’s True Local Flavors

The initial thought might be that Gimpo lacks unique dining spots, especially compared to Seoul. However, the best way to find authentic local food is often to ask the people who live there. Venturing into Gimpo, we sought recommendations from residents to uncover those “찐 맛집” (jjin matjip) – truly delicious, authentic local restaurants that aren’t widely known.

Seongwon Nongjang (성원 농장): A Farm-to-Table Revelation

One standout recommendation led us on a drive into a more rural, almost mountainous area of Gimpo, to a place called Seongwon Nongjang. True to its name, it feels like a real farm, offering a unique outdoor dining experience (야장). The atmosphere here is perfect for a pleasant day out, especially in nice weather.

Specialty: This restaurant is renowned for its grilled pork belly (삼겹살) cooked over oak firewood (참나무 숯). They typically sell it in generous 1kg units, perfect for sharing. The long cooking time over the fire, about 30-40 minutes, infuses the meat with a wonderful smoky flavor.

Highlights:

Incredibly tender and juicy pork belly, almost as soft as beef tenderloin.

The oak charcoal grilling imparts a unique aroma and texture.

The kimchi is exceptionally delicious, homemade-style.

Generous portion sizes, emphasizing value.

Rustic, outdoor seating atmosphere.

Location: Located in a farm/mountain setting within Gimpo, offering a retreat from the city.
General Rating: Highly praised for quality, taste, value, and atmosphere. Declared the ultimate #1 pick for Gimpo in this food journey.

Tongyeong Haemul Ttukbaegi (통영 해물 뚝배기): Seafood Bounty in a Pot

Another promising lead took us to the Yangchon area of Gimpo, to a seafood hot pot restaurant known as Tongyeong Haemul Ttukbaegi. Recommended as a local secret, this spot specializes in bringing the fresh flavors of the sea to your table.

Specialty: The signature dish is the Haemul Ttukbaegi (seafood hot pot), served bubbling in a traditional earthenware pot. You can choose between mild and spicy versions. At 13,000 KRW, the price is remarkably reasonable for the contents.

Highlights:

Generous amount of fresh seafood, including a whole squid, abalone, various clams (like mussels and surf clams), and shrimp.

The broth is exceptionally deep, refreshing, and flavorful – described as comparable to the broth of a more upscale Haemultang (해천탕).

Excellent value for the quantity and quality of ingredients.

Location: Found in the Yangchon area of Gimpo.
General Rating: Highly praised for the abundant fresh seafood, amazing broth, and incredible value for the price.

Yukdeokku (육덕후): Discovering Cheonggyeopsal

Seeking more unique recommendations, we were introduced to Yukdeokku, located in the Tudon area. This restaurant offers a pork experience unlike any other, centered around a special cut.

Specialty: The star dish here is “Cheonggyeopsal” (천겹살), described as a unique cut blending characteristics of pork jowl (항정살) and pork belly (삼겹살). It’s served with a special set of accompaniments for wrapping.

Highlights:

Cheonggyeopsal has a unique, delightful texture – a perfect balance of tenderness and a pleasant chewiness/crispiness.

Unlike regular pork jowl, the excess fat is trimmed, making it less greasy while retaining richness.

Comes with a special wrap set including seaweed, peanut sauce, chili paste, bean sprouts, etc., creating complex and delicious bites.

Modern and clean atmosphere.

Location: Located in the Tudon area of Gimpo.
General Rating: Praised for its unique and delicious signature meat cut and the creative wrapping method.

Beyond the Food: A Glimpse of Gimpo

Our journey also offered other insights into Gimpo life, from the infamous congestion of the Gimpo Goldline subway to the surprisingly debated location of Gimpo Airport (which is technically in Seoul’s Gangseo-gu!). We even visited LaVeniche March Avenue, an area designed to resemble Venice, though perhaps lacking water on the day of our visit.

Conclusion: Gimpo’s Culinary Scene Shines

Contrary to initial skepticism, Gimpo proved to have a vibrant and delicious local food scene. From the rustic charm and incredible oak-grilled pork at Seongwon Nongjang (our ultimate #1 pick) to the generous and flavorful seafood hot pot at Tongyeong Haemul Ttukbaegi, and the unique Cheonggyeopsal experience at Yukdeokku, Gimpo offers diverse and high-quality dining options that are worth exploring. So next time you think of Gimpo, think beyond the airport – think of the amazing food waiting to be discovered!
