Busan’s Best Pork Rice Soup: Discovering a Hidden Gem Locals Rave About
Busan, a vibrant port city in South Korea, is renowned for its delicious cuisine, and among the must-try dishes is undoubtedly Dwaeji Gukbap, or Pork Rice Soup. This hearty and flavorful soup is a staple for locals and a comforting meal enjoyed year-round. Recently, a local Busan newspaper conducted a poll among native Busan residents to determine their favorite Pork Rice Soup restaurants. The competition was fierce, with 39 well-known establishments vying for the top spot.
The Ultimate Pork Rice Soup Showdown
The results were overwhelmingly in favor of Yangsan House (양산집), located in Busan’s Jung-gu district, which secured a staggering 51% of the votes, claiming the coveted number one position. Following behind in second place with 27% of the votes was Youngjin Pork Rice Soup (영진돼지국밥), a popular chain restaurant with numerous locations across Busan. Rounding out the top three with 8% of the votes was Yangsang Pork Rice Soup (양상국밥), specifically the Haeundae main branch. Interestingly, none of these top three had been previously recognized in the “Top 10 Busan Tastes” list, adding a fresh perspective to Busan’s culinary scene.
Unexpected Delight: Yangsang Pork Rice Soup (3rd Place)
Intrigued by the poll results, I decided to embark on a Pork Rice Soup adventure, visiting both the top-ranked Yangsan House and the third-ranked Yangsang Pork Rice Soup. Initially, I planned to visit the number one ranked Yangsan House on New Year’s Day, but unfortunately, it was closed. My attempt to visit the second-ranked Youngjin also failed as they seemed to be closed as well. Reluctantly, I ended up at Yangsang Pork Rice Soup (3rd place) in Haeundae. To my surprise, despite having no prior expectations, the Pork Rice Soup at Yangsang House was absolutely phenomenal.
I usually prefer “Pramer Gukbap” (Pressure Cooker Pork Rice Soup), but at Yangsang, I ordered the regular Pork Rice Soup. The broth was unlike any Pork Rice Soup I had ever tasted. It was remarkably clear, almost like Gomtang (Beef Bone Soup), rather than the typical milky or reddish broth often associated with Dwaeji Gukbap. There was absolutely no porky odor, and the savory depth of flavor was exceptional. It was a truly clean and rich broth, a completely new and delightful Pork Rice Soup experience for me. I had initially planned to only eat Pork Rice Soup once during my Busan trip, but after tasting Yangsang House’s version, I knew I had to explore further.
Revisiting the Champion: Yangsan House (1st Place)
The exceptional taste of the 3rd-ranked Yangsang House made me even more curious about the top-ranked Yangsan House. How could the 1st place winner, with such an overwhelming majority of votes, possibly be? I returned to Yangsan House the next day for lunch. As expected, the restaurant was packed, and I had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. I ordered Pork Rice Soup with rice served separately and eagerly anticipated the taste.
However, my experience at Yangsan House was surprisingly different from Yangsang Pork Rice Soup. While the Pork Rice Soup at Yangsan House was certainly tasty, it tasted like a standard, widely available Pork Rice Soup that you could find anywhere in Korea. It wasn’t particularly unique or special, and it didn’t leave me with the “must-visit” impression that Yangsang Pork Rice Soup did. It was good, but it lacked the distinctive character I expect from a top-ranked restaurant, especially one voted number one by locals.
Conclusion: Taste is Subjective, but Uniqueness Speaks Volumes
In conclusion, while Yangsan House is undoubtedly a popular and well-loved Pork Rice Soup restaurant in Busan, for me personally, the 3rd-ranked Yangsang Pork Rice Soup (Haeundae Branch) stood out as the more memorable and truly unique experience. Its clear, flavorful broth offered a refreshing and exceptional take on the classic Dwaeji Gukbap. Taste is subjective, and everyone’s palate is different, but in my opinion, Yangsang Pork Rice Soup offered a Pork Rice Soup experience that was truly distinct and worth seeking out. If you are in Busan and looking for an extraordinary bowl of Pork Rice Soup that deviates from the norm, I highly recommend giving Yangsang Pork Rice Soup a try!
