Jamsil’s Top-Rated Aged Amberjack: A Must-Visit Seafood Restaurant – Pado House Review

Hello everyone! Seojin here. Recently, my aged amberjack restaurant review got a great response, so I’ve prepared another top-notch amberjack spot for you. This time, it’s Pado House (파도집) in Jamsil, known as the number one place for aged amberjack in the area. Be warned, though, it’s also notorious for its long wait times! Having recently gained popularity on Instagram, I decided to visit myself after introducing the positive aspects of Hong Gildong Hoi-San Instagram (presumably a previous blog post or video). And I must say, I was extremely satisfied. Let’s dive into the review of Pado House.

Location and Ambiance

Pado House is located in Songpa-gu, Seoul, near Jamsil Station Exit 10, in the Bangi-dong Food Alley (방이 먹자 골목). Specifically, it’s on the right side of Sokcho Nosu (속초 노수). It’s slightly off the main street but easily accessible.

The restaurant opens at 5 PM, but considering it was a weekend, I arrived around 3:45 PM. I managed to get waiting number 2! The waiting system is unique – you line up on the stairs, going up floor by floor from the 2nd-floor entrance of Pado House. By around 4:30 PM, the line seemed to reach the 4th floor. After the first round of seating, they switch to a Catch Table system. Even then, around 7 PM, there were about 35 teams waiting.

The Food: Aged Sashimi and More

Pado House’s main menu features a variety of sashimi options including:

  • Aged Amberjack (숙성 대방어)
  • Aged Red Sea Bream (숙성 참돔)
  • Aged Flatfish (숙성 광어)
  • Spanish Mackerel Sashimi (대삼치회)

They also offer set menus combining these options. Today, four of us (3 men and 1 woman) tried the Medium Amberjack & Flatfish Set (방어 광어 세트 중자). In hindsight, for four people, I’d recommend ordering the Large size. We ended up adding a Small Assorted Sashimi (모듬회 소자) later.

Amberjack & Flatfish Set – A Taste of Perfection

Orders are taken while you wait, so the sashimi arrived promptly after we were seated. We started with a light cheers and dug in! The Medium Amberjack & Flatfish Set was beautifully presented. The sashimi slices were thick and perfectly aged, with various garnishes adding to the visual appeal. Apparently, the Large set is essentially two of these platters.

The aging process truly enhanced the amberjack’s flavor, intensifying that rich, fatty taste that melts in your mouth. Combined with the thick cuts, it was incredibly satisfying and flavorful. The couple who arrived and waited with me took a bite and immediately forgave me for making them wait, haha! It truly was the best aged sashimi I’ve had recently.

The flatfish, including the prized fin part, was also excellent. The aging process brought out its sweetness, and the texture and sweetness of the flatfish were arguably even better than the amberjack. Confession time: I don’t usually eat the fin part, but I happily gave it to my friend who does. It’s also delicious dipped in soy sauce.

Service and Side Dishes

Pado House is also known for its generous service. First, we received grilled fish and grilled fish head. My friend, who’s from the coast of Geoje Island, speculated that the grilled fish was gurnard (쏨뱅이). We weren’t sure what kind of fish head it was, but it was delicious nonetheless!

The second service dish was beef sashimi (육사시미) and live octopus (낙지 탕탕이). Note that the live octopus was obtained by writing a receipt review. The beef sashimi was plated in a style reminiscent of Daejeon’s Taepyeongso Gukbap (a famous Korean beef soup), which was unique. It was a perfect snack to enjoy with drinks between bites of sashimi, and these two service dishes provided a good protein boost!

Assorted Sashimi – Variety and Quality

As we were still a bit hungry, we ordered a Small Assorted Sashimi. It featured amberjack and salmon in the center, surrounded by flatfish, red sea bream, yuubiki (lightly seared sashimi), and Spanish mackerel, arranged clockwise from the 12 o’clock position. It was great to enjoy such a variety of fish. We especially appreciated being able to taste Pado House’s signature dishes – the Spanish mackerel and yuubiki sea bream. All the sashimi pieces were thick, generous, and perfectly aged. Everything was delicious.

Overall Verdict

In conclusion, Pado House is a restaurant where the taste is absolutely worth the hour-long (or more!) wait. Even if you have to do an “open run” to get in, the delicious food will fully compensate for your efforts. If you’re unlucky with the open run, I recommend putting your name down and going to a second location nearby while you wait. Pado House is a must-visit for any sashimi lover in Jamsil.

General Rating

Highly Recommended (4.5/5 stars) – Excellent aged sashimi, generous service, and worth the wait.
