Discover Da Mongji in Gangnam: Aged Pork & Innovative Sous Vide Delights
Welcome to a delicious journey to Da Mongji (다 몽지), a hidden gem nestled in the bustling Gangnam district of Seoul. Located conveniently in the back alley behind Gangnam CGV, Da Mongji offers a unique dining experience centered around high-quality aged pork and innovative sous vide dishes.
A Memorable Find in Gangnam
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Da Mongji, prompted by a friend’s recommendation and its previous feature on a local food channel. From the moment I stepped in, I knew I was in for a treat. The promise of exceptional pork, especially their special sous vide menu, made this visit particularly exciting.
Ambiance and Setting
Da Mongji provides a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. We were seated in a cozy corner of the restaurant, which also boasts a spacious hall, making it suitable for various gatherings. The initial setup impressed me, featuring an array of delectable sauces, flavorful side dishes, and a rich, savory beef bone broth – a welcome sign of a restaurant committed to quality ingredients, typically found in premium Korean beef establishments.
Must-Try Dishes at Da Mongji
Exquisite Appetizer: Yukhoe (Beef Tartare)
Our culinary adventure began with Yukhoe, Korean beef tartare, served elegantly with mini sushi rice. This set menu side dish was far from ordinary. The vibrant color and freshness of the Yukhoe were immediately appealing. Mixed with a raw egg yolk, chili, and pear sauce, it was a delightful and refreshing start to the meal.
The Impressive Bone-in Loin (Tomahawk Pork)
Next came the visually stunning Bone-in Loin, often referred to as “Tomahawk Pork.” The presentation alone was captivating. This cut, taken from the rib area excluding the belly, is expertly grilled by Da Mongji’s staff. Their professional grilling service is a significant highlight, ensuring perfectly cooked meat every time. They even use a torch to add a final touch of crispness. Served with a variety of sauces, I personally found the wasabi to be an excellent complement to the rich pork flavor.
Innovative Sous Vide Selections: Pork Jowl & Seasoned Short Rib
The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Sous Vide menu. We sampled the Special Seasoned Pork Jowl (Hangjeongsal) and Seasoned Short Rib. The sous vide preparation method truly elevated these dishes. The Pork Jowl, served in a unique ring shape, was incredibly tender and flavorful, a delightful departure from typical grilled Hangjeongsal. The Seasoned Short Rib was equally impressive, showcasing the tenderness and juiciness that sous vide cooking delivers. The homemade side dishes and sauces further enhanced the overall dining experience, creating harmonious flavor combinations with each bite.
A Satisfying Finale: Kimchi Jjigae
To conclude our feast, we indulged in Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi Stew). Despite feeling quite full, we couldn’t resist this classic Korean dish. It was a comforting and flavorful ending to a truly memorable meal.
