Discover Daehanok: Seoul’s Must-Visit Spot for Delicious Kkori Suyuk (Oxtail Stew) in Yeongdeungpo
If you’re a soju enthusiast visiting Seoul, you absolutely must check out Daehanok. Considered a haven for those who appreciate a good drink, Daehanok specializes in one dish that perfectly complements a bottle (or more!) of soju: Kkori Suyuk (꼬리수육), or braised oxtail.
Daehanok: A Legend in Yeongdeungpo for Kkori Suyuk
Located near Yeongdeungpo Station, Daehanok is renowned for its exceptional Kkori Suyuk. Its popularity means you’ll likely encounter a long wait during dinner hours at the main branch. But here’s a local tip for you!
Secret Tip: Visit Daehanok’s Singildong Branch for No Wait!
Just a short distance from Yeongdeungpo Station towards Singildong, you’ll find Daehanok’s second branch. The best part? The taste and menu are exactly the same, but without the long queues! The two branches are very close, so if you find a long wait at the main branch, heading to the Singildong location is a smart move.
A Taste of Daehanok’s Menu
Daehanok offers a menu centered around hearty and comforting Korean soups and braised dishes. Besides their star dish, Kkori Suyuk, you can also find:
- Kkori Tang (꼬리탕): Oxtail Soup
- Dogani Tang (도가니탕): Beef Knee Soup
- Seolleongtang (설렁탕): Ox Bone Soup
- Dogani Suyuk (도가니수육): Braised Beef Knee
For our visit, a group of three guys ordered the large size Kkori Suyuk, and it was perfect. Even for two people, the large size seems like a great choice!
Our Kkori Suyuk Experience: A Foodie Paradise
The food arrived incredibly fast, starting with individual bowls of rich, milky broth. Perfectly seasoned and deeply flavorful, this broth alone was better than many Seolleongtang restaurants I’ve been to! And the best part? They offer refills without hesitation. This is a sure sign of a genuinely great Korean soup restaurant – they are generous with their broth.
Speaking of great Korean soup restaurants, you know they are judged by their Kimchi and Kkakdugi (깍두기 – radish kimchi). Daehanok’s kimchi and kkakdugi were absolutely top-notch – perfectly refreshing and delicious, the quintessential accompaniments to Korean comfort food. Just these side dishes alone, along with some water, could easily accompany a bottle of soju!
The Star of the Show: Kkori Suyuk
Then came the main event: the Kkori Suyuk. A massive plate piled high with braised oxtail, generously topped with fresh chives, reminiscent of Suyuk (boiled pork belly) presentations. The oxtail was braised in a sweet and savory soy sauce-based marinade. The combination of the sweet sauce and the incredibly tender meat was heavenly. The meat was so tender, it practically fell off the bone – a testament to the quality of the ingredients and masterful preparation. Absolutely no gamey smell whatsoever! This is a dish that anyone can enjoy, regardless of their familiarity with Korean cuisine.
The soy sauce marinade isn’t overly salty, allowing you to generously enjoy it with the fresh chives, enhancing each bite. While the oxtail is rich and flavorful, the fresh chives and the marinade perfectly balance any potential richness, keeping you wanting more. This balance is, in my opinion, the key to Daehanok’s Kkori Suyuk.
We even got a broth refill mid-meal! If you want to sample their Seolleongtang without committing to a full bowl, they offer a “Bantang” (반탕), a half-serving of Seolleongtang with a decent amount of meat.
Don’t Miss the Noodle Finale!
After enjoying most of the oxtail with kimchi and kkakdugi, we had a brilliant idea. Leaving a bit of the braised oxtail and the delicious soy sauce marinade, we ordered a serving of noodles (국수사리). Mixed together, it was like a spicy, savory bibim-guksu (spicy mixed noodles) – truly amazing and satisfying! While I usually don’t eat much carbs during drinking sessions, soba noodles with this sauce are irresistible. It’s not rice, so it doesn’t count as a heavy carb, right?
In a short time, fueled by delicious Kkori Suyuk and soju, we had a fantastic and fulfilling meal. If you are watching this review, you should definitely visit Daehanok and experience this incredible food for yourself. You won’t regret it!
Until next time, cheers!
