Rainy days in Seoul call for delicious comfort food, and I recently discovered a restaurant that’s absolutely perfect for a downpour! From the signboard itself, Daegae Shinrang Jogae Shinbu (대개 신랑 조개 신부) boldly proclaims itself as the ultimate destination for incredible value and generous portions. Let’s dive right into this amazing spot near King Sejong Grand Station.
Discovering a Traveler’s Paradise in Seoul’s Culinary Scene
For travelers exploring Seoul, finding truly authentic and delicious local eateries can be a treasure hunt. This is especially true in neighborhoods known for their high culinary standards. Located just a 7-minute walk from King Sejong Grand Station (킹심리역) Exit 2, Daegae Shinrang Jogae Shinbu is a true gem worth seeking out. The name itself, meaning “Big Crab Groom, Clam Bride,” suggests a delightful pairing, promising a marriage of flavors that’s meant to last a hundred years! They even boast of incredibly discounted prices, confidently declaring they “give away” portions generously. Let’s see if they live up to the hype!
Navigating the Menu: A Feast for the Eyes (and Wallet)
The menu is certainly…spirited! It’s packed with options, but thankfully, the prices are incredibly reasonable. I was tempted by the spicy cockle bibimbap, but since I’m already talking so much, I decided to skip it this time. The side dishes arrived – an eclectic and somewhat unexpected combination – along with refreshing water kimchi, which I happily devoured while waiting for the main event.
The Legendary Clam Stew: A Mountain of Seafood
And then it arrived: the “generous portion” clam stew! The size is truly overwhelming. Seeing it with your own eyes is unbelievable. Since there were two of us, we opted for the small-sized Muk-eunji Jjogaejjim (묵은지 조개찜), aged kimchi clam stew, priced at an astonishing ₩35,000. “Small” is an understatement – this could feed a small army! The portion was so massive, it felt more like a seafood bath than a stew. Seriously, this could last me for days! The size of the scallops alone was something I’d never seen before in my life.
A Unique and Unforgettable Flavor Combination
The menu is definitely creative, and the combination of clam stew with aged kimchi (Muk-eunji) is pure genius. The tender scallops and the flavorful Muk-eunji are a match made in culinary heaven. Whoever came up with this pairing deserves an award! They practically give you a whole head of kimchi in there, allowing you to grab and enjoy mouthful after mouthful. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a round of drinks!
The romantic moment arrived as I wrapped a piece of scallop with Muk-eunji – a truly delightful bite. As we dug deeper, we discovered delicious clams and mussels, each boasting amazing quality. We enthusiastically ate and drank, uncovering the flavorful broth at the bottom. I haven’t been this enthusiastic about anything in a while, definitely not even work!
Surprise Events and Refreshing Mulhoe
They even have a fun lucky draw event at each table, where you can win prizes! (Let’s just say I “won” something exciting… wink wink). Next up, we indulged in the Mulhoe (물회), cold raw fish soup – perfect for the current weather. They generously serve somen noodles with it. Alternating between the warm clam stew and the icy Mulhoe is like a sauna and cold bath for your palate – an incredible sensation! The Mulhoe broth is perfectly seasoned, a true example of delicious Mulhoe. The fresh and chewy abalone was fantastic, especially paired with a shot of soju. I was truly in a state of bliss.
The Grand Finale: Ramen and Final Thoughts
To finish off this epic meal, we ordered ramen, completing the hot, cold, and warm course – like a full spa treatment for your stomach! Slurping up the perfectly cooked ramen noodles, it was time for my final thoughts. This place is truly exceptional value for money. But more than that, the unique and delicious Muk-eunji Jjogaejjim is a must-try. It’s a dish so special, it’s worth traveling for. On a day like today, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy good food and drinks. Daegae Shinrang Jogae Shinbu is a fantastic culinary destination. Stay tuned for more of my delicious Seoul adventures!
