Legendary Samgyeopsal at Manbok Jeongyukjeom near Suyu Station: A True Hidden Gem
If the exterior itself gives you a feeling, you know you’re in for something special. I visited a legendary restaurant, often called a “life samgyeopsal” place by many. Unlike countless generic franchise Korean BBQ joints, this place, Manbok Jeongyukjeom’s Acquaintance (만복 정육점이 아는 집), is truly unique. Let’s dive right in!
Authentic Nopo Vibe and Exceptional Meat Quality
Located near Suyu Station Exit 1, a short walk away, Manbok Jeongyukjeom’s Acquaintance has been recommended by my channel subscribers for three years, and I even visited last year. It’s a well-established and highly-regarded spot. The atmosphere perfectly complements a soju with samgyeopsal – a true old-school vibe, not just a concept, but genuinely authentic.
The menu is straightforward, with reasonable prices. The thick-cut samgyeopsal, with its perfect fat-to-meat ratio, is a sight to behold. The quality is exceptional, with marbling rarely seen in samgyeopsal. Served with fresh pajorim (seasoned green onions) and various side dishes, the table setting is abundant and inviting.
Sizzling Samgyeopsal on Stone Grill
The samgyeopsal is grilled on a heated 돌판 (stone grill), arranged meticulously. Kimchi is placed strategically to cook in the rendered pork fat. This is the ultimate way to enjoy samgyeopsal! My friend expertly grilled the meat while I cheered him on. Following the trend, I even did a little “Bikki Bikki” dance in anticipation.
The first bite, simply with a touch of salt, was incredible – though maybe I added a bit too much salt! A proper ssam (wrap) followed, delivering an explosion of flavor. The meat was so good it was almost comical, prompting the owner to joke if a seal had entered the restaurant!
Each perfectly grilled piece was truly 인생 삼겹살 (life samgyeopsal). The rich pork flavor, the thick, chewy texture, and the crispy skin – it’s a legendary combination, unlike any samgyeopsal I’ve had before.
Beyond Samgyeopsal: Hangjeongsal, Yukhoe, and Doenjang Jjigae
We also tried 항정살 (hangjeongsal – pork jowl/neck). The thick cuts had a wonderfully chewy and savory texture. The quality was outstanding, packed with flavor. Paired with the sweet and tangy pajorim, it was truly a “Manbok” (ten thousand blessings) experience in every bite.
The 2,000 KRW 된장찌개 (doenjang jjigae – soybean paste stew) is a must-order. It’s comforting and essential to the meal. We also tried 육회 (yukhoe – Korean beef tartare), seasoned with a vibrant red pepper powder-based sauce, not gochujang, offering a clean and addictive flavor, perfect as a soju accompaniment. With sweet pear slices, it was heavenly.
Final Verdict
Manbok Jeongyukjeom’s Acquaintance is a true hidden gem in a quiet alley of Seoul. This 정육점 (butcher shop restaurant) is full of warmth, nostalgia, and most importantly, overflowing with high-quality meat. Highly recommended for a genuine nopo tour and an unforgettable samgyeopsal experience near Suyu Station.
