Discover Seongsu-dong’s Hidden Gems: Unveiling Two Local 맛집 You Must Try
Seongsu-dong, known for its trendy cafes and stylish shops, also hides some true local gems. Join 김사원 (Employee Kim) as we venture into the heart of Seongsu-dong and discover two must-visit 맛집 (delicious restaurants) beloved by locals. From a nostalgic market 분식집 (snack bar) to a 감자탕 (pork bone soup) institution, get ready to explore the authentic flavors of Seongsu-dong!
영수분식 (Youngsu Bunsik): A Nostalgic 분식집 in Tteokdo Market
Our first stop takes us to 뚝도시장 (Tteokdo Market), where time seems to slow down. In this charmingly old-fashioned market, you’ll find 영수분식 (Youngsu Bunsik), a 분식집 that 김사원 confidently declares as “the most 살발라 (amazing/killer) 분식집” he knows.
Step into the market alley and feel the nostalgic atmosphere. 김사원 jokes it’s the perfect spot for a music video that nobody would watch, highlighting the unique, unpolished charm of the place. Reminiscent of the popular Korean dating show “I am Solo,” the name “Youngsu” brings back familiar memories, and just like in the show, this place is well-equipped with 선풍기 (fans) for those hot days. The 야장 (outdoor seating) is a major plus, especially on pleasant days, offering a perfect setting to enjoy delicious food and drinks.
Must-Try Menu: 숯불 치즈곱창 (Charcoal Cheese Gopchang)
While 영수분식 boasts a diverse menu, 김사원 highly recommends the 숯불 치즈곱창 (Charcoal Cheese Gopchang). Imagine tender 곱창 (intestines) grilled over charcoal, topped with melted cheese and a spicy, flavorful sauce. It’s served with a complimentary 부침개 (pancake), perfect as a starter with a refreshing drink. 김사원 suggests pairing it with 얼음 소주 (icy soju) for the ultimate experience, though warns it might be a bit too refreshing for a chilly day!
The dish arrives looking more like a pizza than 곱창, generously covered in cheese and infused with a delightful charcoal aroma. The combination of smoky charcoal flavor, spicy seasoning, and chewy 곱창 is truly unique and addictive. Served with fresh 쌈 채소 (vegetable wraps), you can enjoy it in various delicious combinations.
Location: 뚝도시장 (Tteokdo Market), Seongsu-dong, Seoul
Rating: Highly Recommended by locals for its authentic taste and nostalgic atmosphere.
소문난성수감자탕 (Somunnan Seongsu Gamjatang): Seoul’s Legendary 감자탕 Destination
For our second 맛집, we head to 소문난성수감자탕 (Somunnan Seongsu Gamjatang), located just a 3-minute walk from Seongsu Station Exit 4. This place is so famous that it’s known for its incredibly long waiting lines, even having an annex to accommodate the crowds. Despite its popularity, 김사원 managed to get in quickly, eager to uncover the secret behind the hype.
Beyond 감자탕: Discover 감자국 (Potato Soup)
The menu offers both 감자탕 (pork bone soup) and 감자국 (potato soup). While 감자탕 is their namesake, 김사원 surprisingly prefers the 감자국 (Potato Soup), describing it as having a “more 묵직한 (heavy/rich)” broth. For his meal, he opted for the 감자국 식사 (Gamjaguk Meal) with 우거지 곱빼기 (extra Woogeoji – dried radish greens), a full-option, generously portioned dish.
The 감자국 is served in a massive 뚝배기 (earthenware pot), almost the size of a 세수대아 (washbasin)! The soup is packed with meat, living up to the description of “국물반 고기 반 (half soup, half meat)”. While some may find the hype excessive for the wait, 김사원 acknowledges that the taste is undeniably good, offering a rich and flavorful experience perfect for a hearty meal.
Location: Near Seongsu Station Exit 4, Seongsu-dong, Seoul (3-minute walk)
Rating: Popular and well-regarded for taste, but waiting time may vary. Worth trying for authentic 감자탕 and 감자국.
From the nostalgic charm of 영수분식 in Tteokdo Market to the legendary 감자탕 at 소문난성수감자탕, Seongsu-dong offers a diverse culinary landscape beyond its trendy facade. Explore these local 맛집 and discover the true flavors of this vibrant Seoul neighborhood. 김사원’s 맛갈나는 (deliciously funny) Seoul food adventures continue, so stay tuned for more!
