Myeongdong Kyoja: A Must-Try Kalguksu Restaurant in Seoul

Discover the Famous Kalguksu at Myeongdong Kyoja

Myeongdong Kyoja (명동교자) is a renowned restaurant specializing in Kalguksu, a Korean noodle soup. Famous for its rich and flavorful broth and unique kimchi, Myeongdong Kyoja has become a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists in Seoul. They have a main branch located in Myeongdong and a branch in Itaewon, which impressively occupies an entire building, suggesting its immense popularity and success.

Our Dining Experience: Kalguksu, Mandu, and Kimchi Review

On our visit, we decided to try their signature dishes: Kalguksu, Mandu (dumplings), and Bibim Guksu (spicy mixed noodles). Let's dive into each dish and share our experience.

Signature Kalguksu: Deep Chicken Broth and Flavorful Toppings

Myeongdong Kyoja's Kalguksu is based on a rich chicken broth, setting it apart from typical Kalguksu variations. The soup has a deep and savory flavor profile, enhanced by a subtle smoky taste. It's topped with four small dumplings (mini-gyoza) and a modest portion of stir-fried chicken as garnish. Mixing the chicken garnish into the broth elevates the taste further, creating a delightful combination. The broth itself is thick and flavorful, offering a satisfying umami experience. However, the noodles were noticeably overcooked, which might be a point of contention for some diners depending on personal preference.

Delicious Mandu: A Perfect Side Dish

The Mandu (dumplings) at Myeongdong Kyoja are definitely worth trying. They are well-made and offer a delicious complement to the Kalguksu.

Unique Kimchi: Strong Garlic Kick - A Must-Try (or Be Warned!)

Myeongdong Kyoja is also famous for its Kimchi, which is quite distinctive due to its intensely strong garlic flavor. This Kimchi is not for the faint of heart! The powerful garlic taste might be overwhelming for some initially, but it's undeniably addictive and keeps you coming back for more. It's a truly unique Kimchi experience that you either love or find challenging, but it's certainly memorable.

Bibim Guksu: Passable, but Not Their Highlight

While we tried the Bibim Guksu (spicy mixed noodles), it wasn't particularly impressive compared to their Kalguksu and Kimchi. It's not a bad dish, but it's not something we would specifically recommend ordering at Myeongdong Kyoja. Focus on their specialty, the Kalguksu.

Location & General Rating

Location: Myeongdong Main Branch - 25-2 Myeongdong 2(ga)-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea
General Rating: 4/5 stars

Myeongdong Kyoja offers a satisfying and flavorful meal, especially if you are a fan of rich chicken broth Kalguksu and bold garlic flavors. While the noodles might be slightly overcooked for some, the overall taste and unique Kimchi experience make it a worthwhile visit. We find ourselves returning for their Kalguksu, making it a recommended spot in Myeongdong.
