Myeongdong Foodie Adventure: Delicious Knife Noodles and Unique Kimbap at Myeongdong Kyoja & Myeonghwadang
Myeongdong, a bustling shopping district in Seoul, is also a paradise for food lovers. Recently, I had a chance to revisit two iconic restaurants in Myeongdong: Myeongdong Kyoja, famous for its knife-cut noodle soup (Kalguksu), and Myeonghwadang, a popular snack bar (Bunsik) known for its unique Kimbap. Both restaurants are conveniently located in Myeongdong, making them easily accessible for anyone exploring the area.
Myeongdong Kyoja: A Legacy of Knife-Cut Noodles
Myeongdong Kyoja is a true culinary institution in Myeongdong, with a history dating back to 1966. That’s over 56 years of serving delicious knife-cut noodles! Even before I became a university student and frequented Myeongdong, I heard about this long-standing restaurant. It’s always been a go-to place for many, and even now, despite Myeongdong being less crowded than before, it still attracts a good number of customers.
History and Atmosphere
Upon arriving at the main branch of Myeongdong Kyoja, I noticed the Michelin Bib Gourmand plaques displayed at the entrance, a testament to its consistent quality. Inside, the interior is designed for efficiency, with closely arranged tables to maximize customer turnover. While it might feel a bit packed, this setup is probably why you usually don’t have to wait too long, even during busy hours. They are focused on quick service, and you’ll notice your food arrives incredibly fast – my Kalguksu came out in about 3 minutes!
Must-Try Menu: Knife Noodles (Kalguksu) and Dumplings (Mandu)
Myeongdong Kyoja’s menu is concise, featuring only four main dishes: Kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), Mandu (dumplings), Bibim Guksu (spicy mixed noodles), and Kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup, seasonal). I opted for their signature Kalguksu and Mandu.
Their Kalguksu is chicken broth based, which might differ from the more common seafood or beef broth versions. The rich, flavorful broth is definitely a highlight, enhanced with stir-fried onions and a hint of roasted flavor. It’s topped with chicken and wood ear mushrooms. The noodles are soft and fully cooked, easily broken with chopsticks, a texture that might be a matter of personal preference. Paired with the broth, it’s a comforting and satisfying dish.
The Mandu (dumplings) are also excellent. While slightly smaller than the standalone dumpling order, they are packed with flavorful pork filling and have a good balance of skin to filling. The juicy filling is reminiscent of Xiaolongbao. I personally enjoy their Mandu even more than the noodles!
For those who want more, ordering one noodle dish per person allows for free refills of noodles and rice, ensuring you leave fully satisfied.
Unique Kimchi
Myeongdong Kyoja’s Kimchi is quite distinctive, characterized by a strong garlic flavor. This intensely garlicky kimchi is a love-it-or-hate-it element. I personally enjoy it, finding it a perfect complement to the noodles and dumplings, balancing the richness of the broth. However, some might find the garlic too overpowering on its own.

Myeonghwadang: Unique Kimbap and Classic 분식 (Snacks)
After enjoying Kalguksu at Myeongdong Kyoja, I headed to Myeonghwadang, a snack bar located not far away. This was my first visit to Myeonghwadang, although my companion is a regular and highly recommended it, particularly for their unique Kimbap.
Unique Kimbap (Rice Rolls)
Myeonghwadang Kimbap stands out due to its seasoned rice. The rice is flavored with vinegar and sugar, giving it a slightly sweet and tangy taste, similar to sushi rice but with a stronger sweetness. This unique rice is incredibly addictive and makes their Kimbap quite special. The overall taste is enhanced by a generous touch of sesame oil.
I tried the Myeonghwadang Kimbap and also ordered Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). The Kimbap’s seasoned rice is indeed very flavorful and satisfying, especially when you are hungry.
Tteokbokki and Other 분식 (Snacks)
The Tteokbokki was also enjoyable, featuring soft rice cakes in a moderately spicy and slightly sweet sauce. The sauce had a nice consistency and paired well with the chewy rice cakes. It’s a classic Bunsik dish done well. Myeonghwadang is also known for other Bunsik items like Noodle Soup (냄비국수) and Jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles), which I plan to try next time.
Atmosphere and Price
Myeonghwadang has a typical casual snack bar atmosphere. The prices are reasonable, especially considering its location in Myeongdong, making it an affordable option for a quick and tasty meal.

Conclusion
Both Myeongdong Kyoja and Myeonghwadang are excellent choices when you are in Myeongdong and craving delicious and satisfying food. Myeongdong Kyoja offers a comforting and flavorful Kalguksu and Mandu with a rich history and Michelin recognition. Myeonghwadang provides a unique Kimbap experience with its seasoned rice and other classic Korean snacks at reasonable prices. While Myeongdong Kyoja can be bustling and fast-paced, both are worth visiting for a taste of authentic Myeongdong flavors!
