Delicious Korean BBQ Feast at Dutoom Restaurant before Sung Si Kyung Concert in Seoul

Hello everyone! In this blog post, I'm excited to share my experience of enjoying a fantastic Korean BBQ dinner at Dutoom (두툼) restaurant before heading to Sung Si Kyung's concert. For those interested only in the food, you can jump to 4 minutes 30 seconds in the video version (mentioned in the original text), and for concert stories, skip to 9 minutes 10 seconds. Unfortunately, filming the concert was prohibited, so I only have footage from outside the venue.

Dutoom Restaurant: A Local Favorite for 숙성 (Aged) Pork BBQ

Dutoom is a pork BBQ restaurant located near Chungjeongno Station. It's easily accessible from both Chungjeongno and Seoul Station, boasting excellent subway connectivity with four lines nearby. I personally walked from Chungjeongno Station. Dutoom was recommended by many people around me as a must-try pork BBQ place, especially for their Samgyeopsal (pork belly). As a Samgyeopsal lover myself, I was eager to visit.

Seoul is known for its amazing K-BBQ scene, with famous spots like Namyeongdon, Geumdwaeji Sikdang, and Kkueopdang. However, beyond these well-known names, countless hidden gems offer equally delicious pork. Choosing a pork restaurant based on location is often a great strategy these days, as the overall quality of Korean BBQ restaurants has significantly improved. While waiting times can be a downside at popular places, Dutoom, despite being busy, felt worth the visit.

First Impression and Dining Experience at Dutoom

We arrived at Dutoom around opening time (3:30 PM) and found about six teams waiting already. They highlight a 21-day 숙성 (aging) process for their pork, which is displayed in a visible aging room – a nice touch! The interior is typical of Korean BBQ restaurants, with round tables and overhead ventilation ducts. Table spacing is comfortable, and some chairs even have backrests – a small but appreciated detail.

For our meal, we ordered 2 servings of Samgyeopsal and 1 serving of Mokssal (pork shoulder). Unfortunately, Hangjungsal (pork jowl) was sold out. We also ordered Gochujang Jjigae (spicy pork stew) and Mul Naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) as sides. The Samgyeopsal looked fantastic, with a slightly dry-aged exterior. The staff expertly grilled the meat for us, a common and welcome service in Korean BBQ restaurants, though it often reflects in slightly higher prices. They started with Samgyeopsal, cutting a large piece into smaller portions on the grill.

The Samgyeopsal was indeed delicious! It was perfectly cooked, and the 숙성 process seemed to enhance the flavor. A simple touch of salt was all it needed. I enjoyed it with the unique Muchae (radish kimchi), which had a slightly frozen element, making it refreshingly cool. Dutoom also offers Meljeot (anchovy sauce), a popular dipping sauce especially for Jeju-style pork BBQ. After the Samgyeopsal, the staff grilled the Mokssal. It was cooked to about 70-80%, leaving it juicy and tender. The Mokssal was also good, though perhaps slightly overshadowed by the flavorful Samgyeopsal. We also enjoyed the Gochujang Jjigae, which was rich and full of ingredients, and the grilled mushrooms wrapped in foil, adding a nice touch to the meal. The Mul Naengmyeon was just average, but refreshing.

Overall, Dutoom is a fantastic Samgyeopsal restaurant. While Seoul has many excellent pork BBQ options, Dutoom definitely stands out and is worth revisiting when craving delicious Samgyeopsal.

Sung Si Kyung Concert at Yonsei University

After our satisfying dinner at Dutoom, we headed to Yonsei University for Sung Si Kyung's concert. Yonsei University is accessible from both Sinchon and Ewha Woman's University stations. Securing tickets was incredibly challenging – the online ticketing process was fiercely competitive. I ended up in the 24,000th queue, but thankfully, my friend managed to get tickets!

This was my third Sung Si Kyung concert at Yonsei University's Open-Air Theater. I've been a fan for years, even owning his CDs back in the day. The atmosphere at the concert was amazing. We enjoyed ice cream and coffee at a bakery near the theater while waiting. Although photography and videography were officially prohibited during the main performance, it seemed everyone was recording during the encore! I also joined in for the encore, but I'm still unsure about sharing those clips publicly. The 3.5-hour concert was fantastic, and afterward, we grabbed some late-night street food (oden and tteokbokki).

Visiting Yonsei University campus brought back nostalgic memories of my own university days. It also made me think about creating future blog posts about restaurants near Korea University, my alma mater. Perhaps I'll even revisit my favorite curry place near Sungkyunkwan University soon!
