Discovering Delicious Korean BBQ: Jobakjib Pork Galbi in Mapo, Seoul

If you’re craving authentic Korean BBQ, especially 돼지갈비 (Pork Galbi), Mapo in Seoul is the place to be. Known for its rich history of 돼지고기 (pork) restaurants, Mapo offers a variety of options. Among them is Jobakjib (조박집), a well-established restaurant with a history dating back to 1979. I recently visited their 3rd branch and wanted to share my experience.

A Taste of Tradition: Jobakjib’s Pork Galbi

Jobakjib is one of the many 돼지갈비 restaurants in Mapo, and it’s easy to see why it’s been popular for so long. Starting as a single restaurant, Jobakjib has expanded to three branches, a testament to its enduring appeal. It gained even more fame after being featured on the Korean TV show ” 수요미식회 (Wednesday Food Talk)”. While it used to be incredibly difficult to get a table due to long waits, the opening of the 3rd branch has made it a bit more accessible.

Location and Accessibility

Jobakjib 3rd Branch is conveniently located near Mapo Station (마포역), making it easily accessible by public transport.

Address of Jobakjib 3rd Branch (Approximate): South Korea, Seoul, Mapo-gu, 염리동 (Yeomni-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea) – Please verify the exact address online for the most accurate location.

For those driving, parking is available at 염리생활체육관 주차장 (Yeomni Life Sports Center Parking) right in front of the 3rd branch, offering 1 hour of free parking. While the main branch and 2nd branch offer parking support at 마포유수지 공영주차장 (Mapo Yusuji Public Parking), the 염리생활체육관 주차장 is much more convenient for the 3rd branch.

The Ambiance and Dining Experience

While the original and 2nd branches have a more rustic, traditional feel (노포), the 3rd branch boasts a cleaner, more modern interior. I personally prefer the 3rd branch for its slightly less crowded atmosphere and updated environment. Visiting during opening hours meant no waiting time, but it does get busier during peak dinner hours (6-7 PM).

The restaurant layout provides a sense of space between tables, which is always appreciated. The menu is straightforward, with 한우 주물럭 (Korean Beef Jumulleok) and 국내산 돼지갈비 (Domestic Pork Galbi) as main options. I opted for their signature 돼지갈비 (Pork Galbi), ordering 2 servings.

Must-Try: Pork Galbi and Dongchimi Guksu

The 돼지갈비 at Jobakjib is perfectly marinated – not overly sweet and well-seasoned. It’s delicious on its own or with fresh vegetables. A standout side dish is their 동치미국수 (Dongchimi Guksu), a cold radish kimchi noodle soup. The small portion served as a complimentary side is incredibly refreshing, with a slightly sour and clean taste, perfect for cleansing your palate between bites of grilled pork. For just ₩1,000, you can order a larger portion of 동치미국수, which I highly recommend. It’s a fantastic accompaniment to the rich pork galbi.

Other menu items like 공기밥 (rice), 된장찌개 (Doenjang Jjigae – Soybean Paste Stew), and extra 동치미국수 are also very reasonably priced at ₩1,000 each. The 된장찌개 was comforting and flavorful, similar to 시래깃국 (Siraegi Guk – Dried Radish Green Soup).

Final Thoughts

Jobakjib offers a satisfying Korean BBQ experience with delicious 돼지갈비 and a refreshing 동치미국수 that shouldn’t be missed. The 3rd branch is a great option for a slightly more modern and less crowded dining experience. If you’re in Mapo and looking for great 돼지갈비, Jobakjib is definitely worth a visit!
