Discovering Hidden Gems: Authentic Chinese Cuisine at Shincheonji Daebanjeom in Ulsan

Ulsan, known for its beautiful coastline and industrial prowess, also hides culinary treasures waiting to be discovered. On a recent trip to Ulsan before an event, I stumbled upon one such gem: Shincheonji Daebanjeom (신천지 대반점), a Chinese restaurant that exceeded all expectations. Initially searching for a quick and delicious meal before an 8:20 PM stage performance, I was drawn into an authentic Chinese dining experience that left me craving for more.

A Cozy Spot with Authentic Flavors

From the moment I stepped inside Shincheonji Daebanjeom, the sound of Chinese being spoken by the staff immediately signaled authenticity. The restaurant offered private rooms, which was a pleasant surprise. While initially pondering over just ordering classic dishes like Jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and Jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), the aroma of their famous Gogi Twigim (고기 튀김), a Korean-style sweet and sour pork, quickly changed my mind. The prices were surprisingly reasonable, adding to the appeal.

Tasting the Best of the Menu

We started our feast with an order of medium-sized Tangsuyuk (탕수육), medium Kanpunggi (깐풍기) (chili garlic fried chicken), and Gunmandu (군만두) (fried dumplings). Paired with cider and beer, it was a delightful start. The Tangsuyuk was exceptional – the pork was tender inside with a perfectly crispy exterior, living up to its reputation. The sauce was also a standout, perfectly balancing sweetness and tanginess. The Kanpunggi was equally impressive, with a flavorful and slightly spicy kick. The Gunmandu was homemade style, not the typical factory-made dumplings, offering a unique and comforting taste, reminiscent of home-style Chinese cooking.

Beyond the Basics: Exploring More Dishes

As we savored the initial dishes, we couldn’t resist ordering more. We opted for Samseon Ganjajang (삼선 간짜장) (seafood black bean noodles) and Samseon Jjamppong (삼선 짬뽕) (seafood spicy noodle soup). The Ganjajang was rich and flavorful, with plenty of seafood. The Jjamppong broth was deep and satisfying, although I personally leaned towards the rich flavor of the Ganjajang on this visit. We also tried the Mapo Tofu (마파두부) (Mapo tofu) in a small size, which was another excellent choice – flavorful and not overly spicy, catering to Korean tastes while maintaining authentic Chinese notes.

Ambiance and Overall Impression

The restaurant’s interior had a charming retro vibe, which added to the overall positive experience. The staff was friendly and efficient, and the constant buzz of conversation in Chinese created a lively and authentic atmosphere. From the quality of the ingredients to the skillful cooking, Shincheonji Daebanjeom truly stands out. It’s a place where you can taste the heart of authentic Chinese cuisine in Ulsan.
