Discover Tongyeong’s Hidden Culinary Gems: Beyond Seafood – A Local Foodie’s Guide
통영 (Tongyeong), a beautiful coastal city in South Korea, is often celebrated for its fresh seafood, especially oysters. But as a recent food adventure revealed, Tongyeong’s culinary scene is so much richer and more diverse than just the ocean’s bounty! Join us on a journey to uncover some hidden gems recommended by locals, proving that Tongyeong is truly a 맛집 (matjip – delicious restaurant) paradise beyond expectations.
Dumaegol Budaejjigae Dakgalbi (두메골 부대찌개 닭갈비): A Local’s Unexpected Favorite
Our first stop was Dumaegol Budaejjigae Dakgalbi (두메골 부대찌개 닭갈비), a restaurant specializing in Budaejjigae (Korean spicy sausage stew) and Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken). Surprisingly, this was recommended by Tongyeong locals as a must-visit, even over the famous local seafood! Entering the restaurant, the rich aroma of kimchi and stew immediately signaled a genuine culinary experience.
The star dishes here are undoubtedly the Budaejjigae Jeongol (부대찌개 전골), a hot pot version of Budaejjigae, and the homemade Kimchi. The kimchi, made in-house during a week-long dedicated kimchi-making period, is described as having a deep, refreshing flavor with the perfect balance of spice and umami. It’s so good, it’s considered a ” 간판 김치 (ganpan kimchi – signature kimchi)” worthy of its own spotlight!
We ordered the Budaejjigae Jeongol with added sausages and a side of Gyeranmari (계란말이), rolled omelet. The stew was a delightful explosion of flavors, with a rich, deep broth based on a savory stock, perfectly complemented by the flavorful kimchi. It’s packed with generous servings of ramen noodles, tofu, mushrooms, cheese, and tteok (rice cakes). Locals praise it as being comparable to, or even surpassing, the famous Budaejjigae of Uijeongbu!
Location:
While the exact address isn’t provided in the text, it is mentioned to be in Tongyeong, possibly near 서호 전통시장 (Seoho Traditional Market) and 강변다찌 (Gangbyeon Dachi).
General Rating:
Highly recommended by locals, described as a “또간집 (ttogan-jip)” – a place you’ll definitely revisit.
Bapsangmadang (밥상마당): The Soulful Galchi Jorim
Next, we ventured to Bapsangmadang (밥상마당), recommended by a local resident as their absolute favorite restaurant in Tongyeong, specializing in Galchi Jorim (갈치조림), braised beltfish. This choice was another delightful surprise, highlighting the diversity of Tongyeong cuisine beyond seafood platters.
The Galchi Jorim at Bapsangmadang is praised for its freshness and flavor. The beltfish is perfectly braised in a spicy and savory sauce, creating a dish that is both comforting and exciting. The broth is designed to be enjoyed with rice, allowing you to soak up every last drop of flavor. And just like Dumaegol, Bapsangmadang also boasts homemade kimchi, prepared with expertise and local ingredients, enhancing the entire meal.
The side dishes, including seasoned spinach, also impressed, showcasing the fresh, flavorful vegetables grown in the 해풍 (haepung – sea breeze) of Tongyeong.

A local’s favorite, highlighting authentic Tongyeong flavors beyond just typical tourist spots.
Gangbyeon Dachi (강변다찌): Endless Seafood Delights in a Tapas Style
Our final culinary adventure led us to Gangbyeon Dachi (강변다찌), a Dachi restaurant located in front of 중앙시장 (Jungang Market). Dachi is a unique Korean dining style where you pay a fixed price per person and receive a table full of 안주 (anju – dishes to accompany alcohol), with more dishes continuously appearing as you order more 술 (sul – alcohol).
Gangbyeon Dachi lived up to its reputation and beyond! For a set price of ₩40,000 per person (for 2 people), we were treated to an overwhelming array of fresh seafood dishes. The initial spread included oyster muchim (굴무침), abalone porridge (전복죽), sea snails (소라고동), mulhoe (물회), and assorted sashimi including 참돔 (chamdom – red sea bream) and 광어 (gwang-eo – flatfish). And it didn’t stop there! Dish after dish kept arriving: marinated skate (갱개미무침), agu suyuk (아구수육 – steamed monkfish), live octopus (산낙지), grilled sea eel (바닷장어 구이), sea cucumber intestines (해삼내장), and even steamed flower crab (꽃게찜), and more!
The freshness and quality of the seafood were exceptional, particularly the oysters (굴), which were plump, juicy, and bursting with the taste of the sea. The variety was astonishing, showcasing the abundance of Tongyeong’s coastal offerings. It’s truly an immersive seafood experience and an incredible value for the price.
